"Mr.
Fisher [sic] during his military career with the German
Volunteers, now the Service Battery, One Hundred and Eighteenth
Field Artillery, had the record of being the oldest first
sergeant in point of service in Georgia. He was in that outfit
for twelve years as first sergeant, but his period of enlistment
covered twenty-five years. He resigned from duty in 1908. For
his long and faithful servcie as first sergeant, Mr. Fischer,
who was 65 [sic 62] years old, was the only member of the German
Volunteers who had been elected to honorary membership."

obituary indicates that John Frederick Fischer enlisted in the
German Volunteers about 1883 at the age of 22 and retired in
1908 at the age of 47.
