Broughton Street circa 1907

In 1898 Neil's Alhambra Music Hall was located at 216-218 Broughton west and the adjoining saloon and billard parlor at 212-214 (as shown on Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps). This would be across on the right side just before Moyle's Trunk seen on the right and Adlers across the street. Neil Fischer, Sr. states that the Bijou Theater later occuppied the former Alhambra Music Hall location.

Thunderbolt Casino circa 1907

Florence Gildea wrote that her father had an interest in the Casino at Thunderbolt. A special train line took people from the city to Thunderbolt to enjoy the entertainment.

Broughton Trolley circa 1907

Look closely for familiar names: Levys, Globe Shoe Company, Livingston Drugs (Asa Ivey's daughter Annie worked as a cashier here in 1928).

Broughton Trolley circa 1907

Look closely for "The Hub"

Old DeSoto Hotel

According to Florence Gildea, her father Neil Gildea had the first bar in the old DeSoto Hotel. I don't think this is the OLD hotel..

"
He acquired the Budweiser Cafe and opened the first bar in the old DeSoto Hotel."

Leopold Adler's circa 1907

According to 1925-1932 Savannah City Directories, Neil Gildea worked as a watchman at Adlers on Broughton. By this time he was living at 706 East Henry and due to prohibition earlier in the century, he no longer owned any saloons.

Knights of Pythias Hall circa 1908

John Frederick Fischer's obituary states that he was a ranking member of this order. Caption on reverse: The Knights of Pythias building, or Castle Hall, is located on the southeast corner of Barnard and York Streets. The original building was purchased July 1887, since which time great improvements have been made, changing the entire plan.

One of the men could be John Frederick Fischer - Grandfather of Neil Fischer, Sr.

Bull Street from Monterey Square circa 1907

Jasper Monument in Madison Square is visible in the distance. From 1898-1901 Owen Travers is listed as owner of a saloon at 34 Bull Street and James Ivey has barbershop at 38 Bull in the Screven House. According to city directories beginning in 1902, it appears Neil Gildea became the owner.

Official Souenir Programme

John F. Fischer probably participated in the parade and the military display on two days during the festivities. The Knights of Pythias were in the parade. Advertisement on page 5 for J. M. Ivey's barbershop in the Screven Hotel. Mentions the DeSoto and Casino at Thunderbolt - see Gildea.
