JOHN F. FISCHER LONG IN MILITARY

Held First Sergeant Rank For Twelve Years

John F. Fischer, who has been prominently identified for years with activities of local secret orders and the military died yesterday at 5 a.m. at his residence, 611 Tattnall street. He suffered but a short illness.
Mr. Fisher [sic] during his military career with the German Volunteers, now the Service Battery, One Hundred and Eighteenth Field Artillery, had the record of being the oldest first sergeant in point of service in Georgia. He was in that outfit for twelve years as first sergeant, but his period of enlistment covered twenty-five years. He resigned from duty in 1908.
For his long and faithful service as first sergeant, Mr. Fischer, who was 65 years old, was the only member of the German Volunteers who had been elected to honorary membership.
The funeral will be held this afternoon at 3:45 o'clock from the residence. As a mark of respect to one of the most ardent supporters of the German Volunteers, the body will be escorted by a guard of honor. This was announced yesterday by Capt. Henry F. Meyer, present commander of the outfit.
Besides his military affliations, Mr. Fischer was custodian of the Knights of Pythias Hall for sometime. He was a member of Franklin Lodge No. 7 K. of P., Jemlah Temple No. 129, D.O.K.K., Pythian Sisters, and Daytona Company, Uniform Rank, K. of P. The flag on the K.of P. building is at half mast in honor of Mr. Fischer.
The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Katherine Fischer, four daughters, Mrs. George Jaugstetter, Mrs. H. T. Kuck, Mrs. L. A. Thompson, Mrs. W. L. Slocum; and two sons, John G. and J. William Fischer, all of Savannah.
