forgot, the first photo below features Selim's father Philip Sarraf
who is the brother of Grandpa George Saraf (spouse of Mary Gannam
"Grandma Beecher"). Selim is the baby in Philip's lap
and Joseph is on the left in front of his mother.
Selim visited Savannah in 1965. In an email to "Cousin Phyllis", 27 December 2006, he wrote: "I remember you very very well from the time of my visit to Savannah in November or December 1965. I also remember very well your late first husband Tabakian, as well as your late mother Mary, as well as your brother George and your brother Antoine who came in an improvised visit to Savannah (from Atlanta) while I was there, and also your sisters except Antoinette who was in Texas. It was a happy time meeting you all then. Of course I also very well remember your semi-sister the beautiful baby Iris who was then, I guess, about 8 years old.I live now with my two daughters Philippa and Anita while my son Philip is married and lives in another house with his family." This is Selim's response to an email I sent to him in June 2006 about the photos that Uncle Philip gave me of his son and grandchildren: "I am glad you like the photos and sent copies thereof to your mother and your aunts and uncles. Thank you for your invitation to dinner, but at my age, it is difficult and no longer advisable for me to make such very long trips. Finished the time when I was regularly traveling to such faraway places as China, Japan, etc. Now I can make only short trips to nearby places such as Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Egypt, etc., and occasionally Europe. On your part, if you ever think of visiting this part of the world, your will be cordially invited to be my guest at my home (I live with my two daughters Philippa and Anita) for as long as you may want, and you may be accompanied by any one of yours. My house in Aleppo is situated in a quiet residential quarter of the city. My son Philip lives in a new area of the city, a little far from mine. Please keep me informed of the family news at your end, and please convey my Best Regards to all of yours. Sincerely, Selim Sarraf." Uncle Philip Saraf stated in note dated January 3, 2014, that he spoke with Fadi Sarraf in Canada around Christmas 2013 and Fadi told him that Selim was "no longer with us." I do not have date of his death but it was between December 2006 and Christmas 2013. |
